Venus Williams In Action Monday At The US Open
08.28.2010 NEW YORK-- Venus Williams Monday night at the US Open first round plays her first WTA Tour match since Wimbledon against
Roberta Vinci of Italy. Head to head, Venus leads Vinci 1-0. Venus defeated Vinci in March at Miami 6-1, 6-4.
Venus missed the summer US hardcourt season with a knee injury, but she says she is fit to play the Open. In New York, Venus could meet
the 32nd seeded Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria in the third round. Pironkova beat a possibly injured Venus at Wimbledon this year
and also at the Australian Open a few years ago. Should Venus advance, she could face the defending champion Kim Clijsters of Belgium in the semifinals.

06.26.2010 LONDON-- Monday at Wimbledon in the fourth round, Venus Williams takes on the 23 year old unseeded Jarmilla Groth of Australia. Although she has
not enjoyed much success at the grand slams, Groth reached the fourth round earlier this year at the French Open. The WTA Tour website
says the two players have never met. But in her last interview, Venus says the two players played before when Groth had a different last
name. Groth married last year in 2009.
Venus Williams Into Wimbledon Third Round
06.24.2010 LONDON-- In the second round at Wimbledon, Venus Williams defeated Ekaterina Makarova of Russia 6-0, 6-4. Friday in the third round, Venus
takes on another Russian the 26th seeded Alisa Kleybanova. Head to head Venus is tied with Kleybanova 1-1.
At Wimbledon in 2008, Venus beat the Russian 6-3, 6-4 in the fourth round before losing in last year's
third round at Madrid to Kelybanova 6-3, 3-6, 7-5. On a grass surface, Venus should have the edge.
Venus Williams Could Be Tested At Wimbledon
06.22.2010 LONDON-- At Wimbledon Monday, Venus Williams cruised to leads of 5-0 in both sets before defeating Rossana de los Rios of Paraguay 6-3, 6-2. In the second round Wednesday, Venus could face a test when she meets Ekaterina Makarova of Russia.
Makarova last week on the grass courts at the AEGON Classic beat quality players Flavia Penetta, Nadia Petrova, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Samatha Stosur and Victoria Azarenka all in straight sets in route to winning the singles title. Makarova this week moved from 100 to 67 in the WTA Tour singles rankings.
So Venus will need to be ready to stay in some points without errors. Venus has never played the Russian before. Williams is also entered in the doubles competition with her sister Serena Williams.
Venus Williams Into French Open Doubles Final
06.02.2010 PARIS-- At the French Open in the fourth round, Venus Williams turned in too many errors on a cold and windy day in Paris
and lost to a very consistent Nadia Petrova of Russia 6-4, 6-3 in the singles fourth round. Venus is still in the tournament
however as she today reached the women's doubles final with her sister Serena Williams.
Venus next plays singles at Wimbledon which begins the week of June 21st at London, England.
