08.28.2010 NEW YORK-- Venus Williams Monday night at the US Open first round plays her first WTA Tour match since Wimbledon against Roberta Vinci of Italy. Head to head, Venus leads Vinci 1-0. Venus defeated Vinci in March at Miami 6-1, 6-4.

Venus missed the summer US hardcourt season with a knee injury, but she says she is fit to play the Open. In New York, Venus could meet the 32nd seeded Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria in the third round. Pironkova beat a possibly injured Venus at Wimbledon this year and also at the Australian Open a few years ago. Should Venus advance, she could face the defending champion Kim Clijsters of Belgium in the semifinals.

06.22.2010 LONDON-- At Wimbledon Monday, Venus Williams cruised to leads of 5-0 in both sets before defeating Rossana de los Rios of Paraguay 6-3, 6-2. In the second round Wednesday, Venus could face a test when she meets Ekaterina Makarova of Russia.

Makarova last week on the grass courts at the AEGON Classic beat quality players Flavia Penetta, Nadia Petrova, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Samatha Stosur and Victoria Azarenka all in straight sets in route to winning the singles title.
