Venus Williams Leads Before Wimbledon Rain Delay
06.30.2007 LONDON-- Saturday at Wimbledon Venus Williams led Akiko Morigami 6-2, 1-4 before rain postponed the finish to the 3rd round match until
Monday. Venus played well before Morigami's Monica Seles-like two-handed angled groundstrokes picked up their pace. Should Venus win Monday, she would
then play 2nd seeded Maria Sharapova in the 4th round Tuesday. Venus also is scheduled to play doubles with her sister Serena Williams after her singles match
Venus Williams Wins At Wimbledon In Short Shorts
06.27.2007 LONDON-- Venus Williams' short shorts seemed to command more attention than her quick 6-2, 6-2 second round win over Hana Sromova Thursday.
Venus was able to play much better tennis than in round one however. In round three Saturday, Venus takes on Akiko Morigami of Japan. Venus beat Morigami
in their only meeting at Memphis in February 6-1 2-6 6-4. I was at this match and Venus made too many errors in set two. Also Akiko's two-handed shots will not
work as well on the grass I think due to some low bouncing balls. Also before Wimbledon Akiko lost four matches in a row. Listen to
audio of Akiko on Venus. Our pick: Venus Williams in two sets.
Venus Williams Back From The Brink At Wimbledon
06.27.2007 LONDON-- Yesterday Venus Williams overcame a slow start, a ton of errors and another determined teenager to advance to the second round at
Wimbledon. Williams defeated 19 year old Alla Kudryavtseva of Russia 2-6, 3-6, 7-5 after a comeback from 2-6, 0-2. In round two most likely Thursday, Venus takes
on Hana Sromova of the Czech Republic. Venus has never played Sromova before. Sromova has a 2007 singles record of 4-13 so hopefully Venus will be able to
cash in on her better record and experience with an easy win.
Venus Williams Seeded 23rd, Also To Play Doubles With Serena Williams
06.26.2007 LONDON-- Venus Williams, ranked number 31 this week on the WTA Tour rankings was seeded in Wimbedon singles 23rd based on her past performances at Wimbledon.
Venus also requested and was granted a doubles wildcard into the doubles main draw with her sister and 2007 Australian Open singles champion Serena Williams.
Venus Williams' Fatigue Costs Her French Open Match
06.01.2007 PARIS-- At the French Open early Friday Venus Williams battled but came up short in the end against Jelena Jankovic 6-4, 4-6, 6-1.
In the first set, Venus had a slow start and a few too many forehand errors. In set two Venus cleaned up her game, but this took a toll on her fitness as she was
running down a lot of balls in long rallies and hitting extremely hard to take that set. In set three, Venus got ahead 1-0 before fatigue set in. "The third set went
a little bit faster than what I expected. I felt a little bit slow ... I couldn't get my feet where I wanted them. I actually feel really positive," Venus Williams said. "I'm
disappointed that I lost, but I feel like I'm playing well."
