8 Venus Williams and Irina Spirlea In 1997, on her way to becoming the US Open’s first unseeded finalist, Venus
Williams met unfancied Romanian Irina Spirlea in the semis. Spirlea bumped into Williams during a changeover. The Williams
camp claimed that she said something racist. Venus looked suitably misty-eyed before going on to win. Later, her
in-no-way-overprotective father Richard merely retorted that Spirlea was “a big, ugly, tall, white turkey”. Which was
nice. UK Times Article

Latest Venus rumor: "Williamses will pull out of Doha" and not play again until Miami March 30th.
Contrary to this rumor spreading this morning on the internet, Venus nor Serena are entered in the Doha WTA tennis tournament.
They both are entered in the Dubai event, but neither has confirmed a withdrawal from either tournament. We contacted the
WTA a short time ago and were informed neither sister has withdrawn yet from Dubai.
Venus Withdraws From Antwerp With Injury
Posted 11:05p.m. CST USA -- February 12, 2006
Saturday Venus Williams withdrew from the Proximus Diamond Games to be played this week in
Antwerp due to a sprained ligament. Venus was to play this year for the golden and diamond racket worth more than
one million American dollars.
"The Proximus Diamond Games is a fantastic event that I have enjoyed playing over the years. The tournament staff has always
been extremely hospitable and this has become one of my favorite events. I am especially disappointed about not having an
opportunity to win the diamond racquet this year but I do hope to return in 2007," said Venus Williams.
"Our diamond racket will stay in Belgium for at least another year. Obviously we were looking forward to have Venus once
again in our tournament. She has been a key player in the promotion of our event and is incredibly popular in Belgium. But
as with other top players, injuries have been putting her back. Fortunately we still have an incredible field with 6 top 10
players," says tournament director Bob Verbeeck.
Venus Williams has only played one WTA Tour match so far this year, a first round three set
upset loss in
Melbourne at the Australian Open. Venus is next scheduled to play at Dubai Febraury 20th. Venus' sister Serena Williams is
also entered in the WTA Tour Dubai event. But there is cause to believe based on recent withdrawals that one or both of the
Williams sisters will not actually compete at the tournament.
